Mobile Insurance and International Cover

When you go abroad to another country, you will probably want to take your mobile phone with you.

Whether you are going away on work - or as a holiday - whether on your own or with your partner or with your family, you will probably want to take your phone with you.

Maybe just for emergencies.

Maybe you would actually like to get away from your phone, to cut off for a while - that makes sense.

But most people like to check in with their wife, friends, kids, parents, whoever once in a while during their trip away.

So you need mobile phone insurance that will give you international cover - to protect you while you are out of the UK for a while.  Our insurance of course does this.

We protect your mobile phone while you are away.  But let's be honest - you don't want to be without your phone and need to claim on your mobile phone insurance in the first place.

So how do you look after your phone while you are away?

Here are some obvious and not-so-obvious tips.

1. This applies to when you are at home, in the UK or abroad or wherever.  If you possibly can, ALWAYS keep your mobile phone in the same pocket everywhere you go.  This will train you, deeply ingrain into your mind, into your subconscious mind, that there should always be a bit of bulge of the mobile phone in that pocket. We recommend front right trouser pocket, if that works for you.  Then as soon as there is no phone in that pocket you brain will 'niggle' you and tell you that something is not quite right.  You will realise you have left your phone somewhere FAR quicker and can go back for it or pick it up straight away before you leave.  Do not underestimate the power of this one technique.

2. If you want to switch off and be without your phone don't just leave it in your room.  Leave your mobile phone locked in your hotel safe, either in your room or locked with reception.

3. If you are going to the beach and into the sea, if you are on your own, then you do not want to take your phone with you - because you would have to leave it on the beach while you go into the sea.  So leave it locked in the hotel safe.

4. Especially if you are going to more 'interesting' (read 'dubious') areas or if you are going to tourist areas, where pickpockets are likely to be active, keep your phone in your pocket with something else on top of it like a handkerchief  which makes it harder to pickpocket.

5.  Similarly if you are going to such areas do not make or receive a call unless you really must. And if you do, get out of the main areas - maybe duck into a shop or similar so you are off the streets so it would be harder for a thief to grab it and run.

Follow these 5 simple rules and you are far less likely to need to be making an international claim on your mobile phone insurance.

BUT - things happen - even with the best preparation and prevention.  So make sure you have full mobile phone insurance

Phone insurance progress

The mobile phone insurance market is consolidating.  Because of an unfortunately high fraud rate (and yes, fraud is completely illegal and a jailable offense but some idiots still figure they will get away with it - it just takes a lot of administration to filter it) the market is being hit.  Particularly with iPhone insurance - most likely because the fraudsters see this as a high value phone that the insurance claim can pay out and get them a free one.

It is unfortunate because the knock-on effects are that mobile phone insuranc prices are likely to rise because of this.

All that said, outside of the iPhones, the mobile phone insurance policy itself continues to be very popular with genuine customers who simple want to insure their mobile phone and get it covered and protected.

We'll see what the future holds for policy changes.  The market may move towards more annual polices with discounts rather than monthly payments for the phone insurance
