Mobile Phone Loss

When you lose your phone it is a horrible experience

That creeping feeling as your eyes widen as you suddenly realise you have lost your phone.

Where were you when you last had your mobile phone?

Where did you last see it?

The reality is that if you really just do not know where your phone is, it is quite an isolating and lonely experience because you suddenly feel a bit vulnerable, maybe you feel like you going a bit mad.

Don't worry - it happens to the best of us.

And when you do inevitably lose your mobile phone you do not want to then be in the even worse situation of having to pay the full purchase price of usually many hundreds of pounds to buy a replacement mobile phone.

This is what mobile phone insurance is for.

Be aware that not all phone insurance policies cover loss. Our's does.

Top Tip

Here is a great piece of advice to avoid losing your phone. Get into the habit of always keeping your phone in the same pocket wherever you go, no matter what you're wearing. This will train your brain to always expect that little bump in your pocket - and your brain will then tell you - from the back of you mind "hang on, something's not quite right" and you will quickly realise that your phone is not in your pocket and can hen quickly go back and get it

Everyone we know who has religiously got into this habit has saved themselves from losing their phone on many occasions.

So use this tip to avoid losing your phone - and make sure you have a loss-cover mobile phone insurance just in case.

Mobile Insurance and International Cover

When you go abroad to another country, you will probably want to take your mobile phone with you.

Whether you are going away on work - or as a holiday - whether on your own or with your partner or with your family, you will probably want to take your phone with you.

Maybe just for emergencies.

Maybe you would actually like to get away from your phone, to cut off for a while - that makes sense.

But most people like to check in with their wife, friends, kids, parents, whoever once in a while during their trip away.

So you need mobile phone insurance that will give you international cover - to protect you while you are out of the UK for a while.  Our insurance of course does this.

We protect your mobile phone while you are away.  But let's be honest - you don't want to be without your phone and need to claim on your mobile phone insurance in the first place.

So how do you look after your phone while you are away?

Here are some obvious and not-so-obvious tips.

1. This applies to when you are at home, in the UK or abroad or wherever.  If you possibly can, ALWAYS keep your mobile phone in the same pocket everywhere you go.  This will train you, deeply ingrain into your mind, into your subconscious mind, that there should always be a bit of bulge of the mobile phone in that pocket. We recommend front right trouser pocket, if that works for you.  Then as soon as there is no phone in that pocket you brain will 'niggle' you and tell you that something is not quite right.  You will realise you have left your phone somewhere FAR quicker and can go back for it or pick it up straight away before you leave.  Do not underestimate the power of this one technique.

2. If you want to switch off and be without your phone don't just leave it in your room.  Leave your mobile phone locked in your hotel safe, either in your room or locked with reception.

3. If you are going to the beach and into the sea, if you are on your own, then you do not want to take your phone with you - because you would have to leave it on the beach while you go into the sea.  So leave it locked in the hotel safe.

4. Especially if you are going to more 'interesting' (read 'dubious') areas or if you are going to tourist areas, where pickpockets are likely to be active, keep your phone in your pocket with something else on top of it like a handkerchief  which makes it harder to pickpocket.

5.  Similarly if you are going to such areas do not make or receive a call unless you really must. And if you do, get out of the main areas - maybe duck into a shop or similar so you are off the streets so it would be harder for a thief to grab it and run.

Follow these 5 simple rules and you are far less likely to need to be making an international claim on your mobile phone insurance.

BUT - things happen - even with the best preparation and prevention.  So make sure you have full mobile phone insurance

Phone Insurance – Mobile phone LOSS?

Let's be honest - we've all lost our car keys at some point or other...

Whether the kids 'honestly' didnt hide them, or you had a good night the night before - or you've just plain lost them.  It's infuriating and quite crippling especially when you realise you've lost them just before you HAVE to go out and be somewhere.

It's quite similar when you lose your mobile phone.

It's when you HAVE to make a call that you realize you've lost it - running round the house or office "got to call them, got to call them..."

TIP-TOP TIP:

To realise as soon as possible that your mobile phone is missing, we recommend that you always, always, always keep your phone in the same pocket no matter what clothes you are wearing.

This way, your brain gets trained and tuned in to your phone always being there... or not.

So if you choose to always keep your phone in your front right trouser pocket (a wise favourite) then if it is suddenly no longer there, a nagging little demon at the back of your mind will tell you about its absence from your thigh, far sooner than if you kept your mobile phone in different places every day.

Your mind is a wonderful thing like that.  Use it to your advantage.

Now mobile phone insurance is an obvious answer to mobile phone theft, but in tandem with having phone insurance, there are some fairly obvious (and maybe some not so obvious) steps and precautions to avoid losing your phone in the first place:

1. Always keep your mobile phone in the same pocket in your clothing.  Then you will always subconsciously be aware of the bump in your pocket.

2. Keep it hidden and covered - not so much from a theft point of view but so it cannot bounce out or fall out.

3. If you can live with it, get a chain and attach it to your phone.  Maybe keep your keys on it or something similarly noisy. Then you are more likely to hear if your phone falls out of your pocket.

4. Attach a sticker to the back of your phone or get it engraved with some contact details along the lines of "If found please contact..." If you can, offer a cash reward.  It doesn't have to be much - maybe £20 or £30.  Just enough to tip someone who might maybe be considering doing something else with your phone (maybe they innocently found it but are considering selling it on eBay) - to convince them to help you out and return it.

5. If you have kids, don't let them play with your phone.  Or if you do, make sure you check where they left it regularly.  They will probably swear blind they didnt lose it...

These are the main points on how to avoid losing your mobile phone.  Sure, phone insurance is a wise way to protect yourself because you can't always be 100% certain you wont lose your phone or have it stolen or damaged.  But prevention is better - and more painless - than cure.

Next we will look at how to minimize the pain if your phone IS lost.
